Future of Work India survey results: Reimagining our future workspace and workforce

India as a nation is starting to see increased emphasis on digitisation and technology investments more than ever; with a plethora of measures from rising smartphone penetration to a universal biometric identification system.

Willis Towers Watson conducted a survey in India, covering key industries including manufacturing, financial services, IT & ITeS and other sectors, to find out how are employers moving towards a future workplace and managing emerging work options; from contingent labour to AI and robotics.

Our report examines where breakthroughs are needed and here are some highlights:

Key findings from the survey:

  • Companies expect use of automation in the workplace to increase from a current 14% to 27% in 3 years; higher than the global and APAC average
  • More than half the companies in India believe that automation will augment human performance and create new work, not replace it
  • 61% of companies believe they will require fewer full-time employees in the next three years
  • Full-time employees to reduce from 85% to 78% in 3 years’ time
  • Only 12% companies believe that their HR functions are fully prepared for the changing requirements of automation
  • Top three areas that companies in India are “somewhat prepared” and have already taken some action are – Identifying the emerging skills required for the business (54%), addressing talent deficits through workforce planning (49%), and matching talent to the new work requirements (46%)
